Susan Mazzeo, DSW

Executive Director

Susan Mazzeo, DSW—Interim Executive Director

Susan Mazzeo brings a wealth of experience in nonprofit leadership, advocacy, and mental health services. A 2014 graduate of Monmouth University’s MSW program, Susan began her career at Shore House, a nonprofit providing recovery support to adults living with mental illness, where she was soon promoted to Executive Director. Susan recently earned her Doctor of Social Work in Human Rights Leadership. Her work reflects a strong commitment to advancing human rights, promoting accessibility, and amplifying the voices of individuals and families served by community-based systems.

As a mother who has been through my own personal journey with my family, working with a Family Support Partner made me realize that I, too, could give back to others. FBSANJ has allowed me to guide families through their individual processes and support them with understanding and care.

In peer support, we truly help ourselves while helping others. Our personal experiences with our own children give us the unique ability to understand the challenges families face daily. Supporting parents and caregivers through their individual journeys—and empowering families—is the most rewarding part of the work we do.

I do this so no other caregiver feels like I did, and no other child has a caregiver unaware of a challenging system, as my son did. I do this so more caregivers have a voice than feel they don’t. I do this to validate that my family’s struggles had purpose—and that every hurdle and every victory matters.

I am the mother of two fantastic sons and have a caring husband. After struggling with one of my son’s major challenges, I was paired with FBS, which gave me the right support and reinforced my journey toward education, advocacy, and stabilization. Today, I give back by working for the same organization that once supported me.

I am dedicated to empowering youth and families. I enjoy providing a safe space where young people can explore their strengths in a supportive and inclusive environment where they can be uniquely themselves.

My passion for working with children and families comes from a deep belief that every child deserves the chance to grow in an environment filled with care, support, and opportunity. I find purpose in connecting families with resources and walking alongside them as they build brighter futures. This work is about planting seeds of hope that strengthen communities—just as it once did for me.
